MBRRACE Report finds maternal deaths from pre-eclampsia continue to increase

Today sees the launch of the MBRRACE Report “Lessons learned to inform maternity care from the UK and Ireland Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths and Morbidity 2019-21”

APEC were once again involved in the writing of the lay summary and it can be downloaded from here.

The key points for anyone interested in pre-eclampsia to note are that when you take out maternal deaths from Covid, the deaths are at a very similar level to the previous report but once again, for the fourth time we can see pre-eclampsia deaths have risen, from a low of 2 to 9 – an alarming trend.

The report also shows that Asian women and black women were two and four times more likely to die than white women and women living in the most deprived areas were twice as likely to die as in the least deprived. It also highlights the increase in deaths of women with cardiovascular disorders.  All in all there are few reasons to be optimistic with the messages coming across in this report.
