We are incredibly proud to congratulate Professor Andrew Shennan OBE, our Chair of Trustees, on formally receiving his Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
This prestigious honour recognises outstanding contributions to biomedical and health research, celebrating individuals whose work has made a lasting difference to patient care and medical science.
For those of us at APEC, this recognition comes as no surprise.
Professor Shennan has dedicated his career to improving the health and safety of pregnant women and their babies. As an internationally respected obstetrician and researcher, he has led pioneering work in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pre-eclampsia, pregnancy hypertension and preterm birth. His research has shaped clinical practice in the UK and across the world, helping healthcare professionals identify women at risk earlier and provide life-saving care.
His innovations include the development of the CRADLE Vital Signs Alert, a simple, low-cost blood pressure device that is helping to save the lives of mothers in low-resource settings around the world. He also co-developed the award-winning QUiPP App, which supports clinicians in assessing the risk of preterm birth, giving women and families greater reassurance while helping to ensure those who need specialist care receive it quickly.
Professor Shennan’s influence extends far beyond research. He has played a leading role in improving maternity care through national and international clinical guidance, championing evidence-based practice and working tirelessly to reduce maternal and baby deaths worldwide.
As Chair of Trustees, Professor Shennan brings that same passion, expertise and commitment to Action on Pre-eclampsia. His leadership helps guide our work as we support families affected by pre-eclampsia, raise awareness of the condition, advocate for improved maternity care and invest in research that will help save lives.
Every week, we hear from women and families whose lives have been changed by pre-eclampsia. Having someone with Professor Shennan’s knowledge, compassion and determination leading our Board strengthens our mission and helps ensure we continue to be a trusted voice for everyone affected by this serious pregnancy complication.
