During Black Baby Loss Awareness Week, we honour the babies lost too soon and stand alongside families who continue to face stark inequalities in maternity care and outcomes. Black women in the UK are significantly more likely to experience complications during pregnancy and childbirth, including pre-eclampsia — a serious condition that can put both parent and baby at risk if not recognised and treated early.

Talking openly about pre-eclampsia is vital. Greater awareness of the signs and symptoms, earlier diagnosis, and equitable access to care can help reduce rates of maternal and infant mortality, severe morbidity, and premature birth. These conversations save lives.

In the following video, our trustee Dr Anita Banerjee shares expert insight into pre-eclampsia and its connection to mortality, morbidity, and prematurity rates, and why improving awareness and outcomes for Black families must remain a priority.
