The Inaugural Meeting of APEC International (APECi) Victoria Falls, Zambia, was in February 2020
The team came from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, India, South Africa and the UK to strategise about how they can provide an impactful and useful website with resources about pre-eclampsia, for health professionals, pregnant women and communities across the Global South.
At the meeting, the team brainstormed a mission statement, discussed educational flyers and short video clips and the requisite content for the website. A highlight of the meeting was a screening of the community developed movies about pre-eclampsia, namely Astryd’s Choice– a HAPPEE Project Partnership in Haiti and For the Love of Women – a HAPPEE Project Partnership in Zimbabwe.
APECi will provide a global web-based resource aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal health inequality from pre-eclampsia and hypertensive disorders. It will provide educational materials aimed at increasing awareness and improving outcomes for women and babies. The platform will be multi-lingual, interactive and accessible on mobile technology and aims to engage and educate relevant stakeholders and empower women to improve outcomes throughout the Global South.
The cascading water of the Victoria Falls, which had been plagued by drought in recent months, was what is hoped will be a positive omen of this fruitful new venture which aims to transform lives…
While the official launch of APECi was meant to take place at a FIGO Congress in Kigali in June 2020, COVID-19 put paid to that, but the website is continuing development…. Watch this space: www.apecint.org
